Dutch East- Franschhoek, South Africa. If foodies really have a heaven, it isn’t Paris, Napa, NYC, or Vegas, it is a small town founded by french Huguenots in the 1600’s, nestled in the mountains of the Western Cape of South Africa. Surrounded by vineyards, ranches and farms, this town boasts both a deep-rooted french culinary heritage and some of the most innovative new chefs.
Dutch East is a perfect example of Franschhoek’s culinary prowess, combining classical and modern techniques to deliver incredible east meets west flavors with local/seasonal ingredients. The ambiance alone speaks volumes, as a 100 year old farmhouse frame is elegantly make modern in an almost seamless way. Take, for example, the perfectly prepared Springbok Tataki- which elevates the normally gamey dark meat to the supple excellence of an fine piece of tuna. Even the dessert exemplified this philosophy by putting a unique twist on the traditional milk tarts you can buy in almost any farm stand in the region.
It goes without saying in this area that the winelists ready as a best of best from local producers. This meal’s revelation was a Linx Shiraz sourced and produced less than 3KM from the restaurant.
A multi-course dinner with wine was about $40 per person- making it both amazing in experience and price!
